Relax what is the worst thing that can happen, you play badly wrong notes, slowly,or even you find that you can not play anything. It happens to all of us, the worst thing that ever happend to me was that, my hands would'nt move, really not a single finger, hand turns into wood. Now i promise that was the worst and best thing that  happend to me, after that i had to re-think everything.Trust me its a valuable lesson. :)

zheer, wat do u mean by re think?

Re-think on what it means to memorise, what it takes to really learn a piece, how to avoid tension, the lot. After 2 years i had learnt how to avoid such a situation.
Sure a pianist has no safety net, but its a learning process, not death sentence.

Enjoy the tickling feeling, feel the exceptional state of playing for an audience, turn the anxiousness into enthousiasm, see it like being in a flow of musical energy and inspiration :)

Being nervous is just "part of the game", everyone has to deal with it.

Being confident in yourself will be an advantage, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable to be on stage performing. How to feel comfortable on stage is, imo, quite difficult to learn. Everyone is different, so you need to find out yourself how to feel comfortable on stage.

Playing wrong notes and maybe get a blackout can happen, yes. It's the most embarrassing situation you can be in... But imagine yourself as a person in the crowd. If you're watching/listening to a pianist who get's for example, a blackout, would you laugh?... What would you think in such a situation? Nothing bad probably, cause it can happen to everyone!

Enjoy your first recital.

Once you start playing you will forget where you are.  :D

Think of it as an extra practice session.  ;D

You'll be great.  8)

Good luck.
Thank you and Goodnight.

No person is perfect.   Not one single musician can say they never made a mistake while performing.  THat includes all the famous pianists who ever lived.  I am sure you have heard all the tricks others give for performing.    Consider why you perform.  To please others?  To express yourself?  To give a gift?   The more you are sure of why you do it the less nervous you will be.... that is, the kind of nervous that is mostly fear.    Think about your motives.

For my first recital I was nervous, too.  Hands shaking, sweating, even foot shaking which made the pedal hard to use.  I got through, you will too.

Some advice for the future--the more you perform, the less nervous you get.  So next time, play your whole recital several times for other audiences before the actual recital.  One time I played my recital at 4 nursing homes before the actual performance.  I was not nervous for the actual performance, and it was one of my best.  Nursing home residents love it, too.

Or plan some decent sex just before playing  ;D
But as Thalberg said, (usually) the more you perform, the less nervouss you'll get.

So THAT's what the little hand towel by the piano is for...

If it helps any --

Keep in mind that what's a really big moment for you means virtually nothing to anyone in the audience. Student recitals are generally boring affairs, and nobody attends unless they have a family member playing. Everybody except your own family will probably be looking at their watches while you play, and your family is going to praise you afterwards anyway...

The only time anybody reacted to anything I played at a recital was when I did some selections from the Bach Bb partita. When I got to the Gigue, I accidentally started it faster than I'd ever played it before. The teacher who was hosting the recital said, "Well, in case you thought Bach was boring...", which could be taken two ways. I'd hate to think she meant "We were all on the edge of our chairs waiting for you to crash and burn", but I guess I'll never know at this point.

Haha, I thought she meant that it was more exciting, a fresh change and take on Bach which made it less boring. But I suppose the tone and facial expression may have implied otherwise.
