thalbergian fantasias.
on: October 30, 2007, 10:02:50 AM
are there any pianists composers who wrote fantasias similar in style to thalberg?
i love the fantasia/variations form but it's difficult to find a satisfying one, liszt doesn't do it to me but i do, rarely, find somthing that intrests me in his fantasias
yesterday i was reading a fantasia by prudent on lucia de lammermoor which i found very apealing and i thought finally somthing satesfying and worth studing
clara schumann also wrote an attractive fantasia on theme by bellini
i attached prudent fantasia here so everyone could enjoy it

Fantasy by Martucci on La forza del destino - his teacher was a Thalberg pupil, and the influence is clear.
Pixis Fantasy on Robert le Diable.
Tausig Fantasy on Moniuszko's Halka .. more Lisztian than Thalbergian, I suppose, but an excellent piece of music.

Some more:
Herz, Kalkbrenner, and the Hexameron variations, which I knew is substantially Liszt, but also has contributions from Thalberg, Pixis, Herz, Czerny and Chopin.

The composer pianists from the Italian & French School/Style have a more singing approach towards this genre whilst Liszt produced more orchestral effects.
Martucci is an excellent example as mentioned by ronde and Fumagalli is well worth a look. There are really thousands written in a similar style, most i would wager that have not been played for 100 years.
