Funny Commission

I saw a notice @ school today in the composition faculty - someone is commissioning a work for two pianos, 3 hands... :D:D:D

Apparently Captain Hook will be touring the States with his side-kick Smee...
Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

3 pianos 2 hands would be even more interesting  :D
If it doesn't work - try something different!

Actually, this isn't that funny. It has been done before. Malcolm Arnold, for example, has a piano concerto for 2 pianos, 3 hands. It is a superb and fun composition. Arthur Bliss also revised his concerto for 2 pianos so that it, too, is for 2 pianos, 3 hands. It was mainly done for a 3 handed duo, one of which had a paralyzed left hand.

Yes, I had thought about the possibility that one of the performers might be handicapped.

I have nothing against it, I just thought it was amusing - something one doesn't see too often. But, in logical terms, it seems like a vast waste of resources...but hey, I am sure it can work.

It does work. It works much in the same manner a left hand only composition would work (or one hand in general), but just with an extra piano. I've noticed that the person using one hand tends to have the more important part in the 3 handed compositions I have heard. And they really do work, from what I have heard for this combination.

I didn't think of it this way - thanks :)

Richter in his performances of Mussorgsky Pictures sometimes asked his page turner to hold low bass notes, so those were performances of one piano three hands.
