Jaws - The Revenge

I remember when Michael Caine was nominated for an Oscar for his work in "The Cider House Rules" the host cracked a joke about his involvement with the fourth JAWS movie...polite criticism disguised as a joke I suppose  ;D
Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

The most underwhelming movie I have ever seen was 'Lost in Translation'.

I was just evidently not the intended audience, and I don't see how any more than one in ten people would be.

"Troll 2"

It has the poorest acting I've ever seen and the most atrocious dialogue I've ever heard.  It's considered one of the worst movies ever made, but it's hilarious to watch just because it's so bad.  For starters, there aren't even any trolls in it - they're goblins.  And the town it's set in is called Nilbog (guess what that spells backwards).  I recommend seeing it once (but only once) just for the experience - then you'll truly understand the difference between movies that are actually bad, and movies that are just mediocre.

If many people love a movie, and many people don't. Mant people love an actor , many people don't.
What does it say?

It says little about the art/entertainment and more about the audience and their tastes and ideas of what a good actor and movie should be.

300 was exactly what I hoped it would be and more, I adore it.

Many people find it 'lame, dumb and stupid', but then many find Beethoven's symphonies 'lame, dumb and stupid'.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a serious movie though, I hope you guys were joking.

Jim Carrey is great, both in comedy and in more serious roles.

A movie doesn't have to be good to be liked. Look at Borat. I liked 300; and it was possibly the manliest-man-tough-guy-testosterone-manny-man-man movie in existence. But even though many people liked it, does not make it a good film.

How does that make sense?

If it is liked, there is good in it.

There is no universal definition for what makes a good movie or a good piece of music.

They are two different things--being liked, and being well made. A movie that made people laugh is not necessarily a good one. A movie that required effort on the creator's part usually is.
A well made movie is usually judged upon it's direction, technique, acting, dialogue, plot line(s), orchestration, etc...
One notable difference is that 'liked' movies are usually created to please the masses. 'Good' movies are usually created as pieces of art, or to provoke some train of thought. Liked movies are a dime a dozen. Good movies are rare.

I disagree, but the fundamental difference is your association of 'well made' with 'good'.

A good movie is a movie that someone thinks is good, not everyone will think it's good.

Art does not have to provoke thought, and I actually find art which appeals more to the intellect than the senses to be hollow.

OMG 300 was a terrible movie. No plot at all. They didn't even try.

At least they didn't avoid gayness, which is historically accurate.

When I read ancient greek history I thought the battle of thermopylae would make an ok movie. Hollywood was already doing ancient period movies at that time.

Eternal sunshine wasn't supposed to be a funny movie. It must be by far the highest rated movie by Carrey on IMDB.

You do know 300 was based on a graphic novel?

It has more in common with Sin City than with any 'realistic' historical adaptation.

Absolutely. I'm not surprised that so many people found it "hilarious" when it pandered to the lowest common denominator--a sad sign of the times.

An even sadder thing would be that things haven't changed as far as elitism goes.

I think we can agree the movie was vulgar, but I find it naive and immature to assume that whoever appreciates more vulgar humour to be inferior.

I think the word you will find is 'different'.

I still find it surprising that someone would go to see a movie with that title and be surprised that it isn't a sensetive documentary about a poor shy little guy.

If you are judging the quality of movies solely based upon whether it entertained you, then you are missing out on a lot. A lot of people liked the novel "The Da Vinci Code", but that doesn't mean it was written very good. It was neither innovative or particularly advanced. It was geared toward the masses in order to make a profit; similar to most movies (Superbad and Dude Where's My Car? included) created nowadays.
