Piano Competition

Hi everyone,

Let me begin by saying that I have never competed in a serious piano competition - so this will be my first. As such, I am not really sure how to go about choosing repertoire for the competition. The requirements are as follows:

Candidates registered in the categories 16 up to 25 years and under (which includes me) must include in their musical program works from the baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century periods.

First Round

One Etude chosen from the list of etudes.
Two sonatas by Scarlatti or Soler, or one selection by JS Bach or Handel (in case of a suite, a minimum of three contrasting movements).
One work or a group of movements or one movement of your choice.
(Maximum time: 25 min)

Provincial Final

One work from the classical period or a minimum of two contrasting movements of a sonata from the classical period.
One work or a group of movements or one movement of your choice.
(Maximum time: 28 min)

National Final

One movement of a concerto or the second and third movements.
(Maximum time: 25 min)

Here is are a few works that are already in my repertoire that I thought might be appropriate:

Bach - partita no. 5, french suite no. 5, several scarlatti sonatas (not sure of the Kirkpatrick nubers off hand)

Etude - Chopin Op. 25 No. 12

Schubert - Wanderer fantasie, all of his impromptus except Op. 90 No. 3, Moments Musicaux

Schumann - Carnival of Vienna, Papillons, Scenes from Childhood, most of Carnival

Mozart - K. 283, K. 309, K. 331, K. 332 (mvmts. 1 and 2), K. 333, K. 545, K. 570 (mvmts. 1 and 2)

Beethoven - Op. 2/1, Op. 2/3, Op. 10/1, Op. 10/2, Op. 13, Op. 14/1, Op. 27/2, Op. 31/1, Op. 31/3 (mvmts. 1-3), Op. 49/2, Op. 57 (mvmt. 3), Op. 79, Op. 90, Op. 101 (except theme and var.), Op. 106 (mvmts. 1 and 2 only),

Brahms - rhapsody Op. 79/2, sonata no. 2 in f# minor, hungarian dance no. 2 and 3 for solo piano

Ginastera - 12 American Preludes

Grieg - Sonata in e minor Op. 7

Concertos - Tchaikovsky 1, Mendelssohn g minor, Beethoven Emperor (last movement only), Mozart 23, Beethoven no.2 in Bb major

So - aside from not knowing what to choose from what I have listed above, I also need to learn a new piece (20th century) and perhaps a new concerto (just the first movement) if none of the above are suitable.

Any help would be appreciated - I really have no idea how to go about choosing.

First round: Bach Partita 5, Chopet 25/5 (just learn it ) and Papillons?

Second: Shitty time restriction, are you sure it's 28? Anyway, Beethoven 31/3 and some Ginastera Preludes (or Scriabin?)

Finals: Tchaikovsky1 second+third movement, Emperor first movement or second+third movement. Maybe Medtner if you're up for it, but I don't know how much time you still have.

First stage: as per Kassaa's suggestion - also consider Schubert's f minor Impromptu op. 142 no. 1 instead of Papillons

Provincial final: Beethoven Op. 90 is a great choice if you play the 2nd movement very well. Then you can follow up with something more technicalfor the other 13 minutes - probably should be your new 20th century piece. I suggest Copland's Piano Variations.

National final: I second the Emperor. Either grouping is fine.

This is totally CMC right?  I'll be entering too, I think.  Which age category will you be entering?  I will either do 19, or 25 (to be able to play a complete concerto).

Yep, it's the CMC. I think I'll do the -23 category.

And i'll be in the 18 yrs old category. Will be my first time at CMC too.

I have no IDEA if this has been posted already, if it has ill just support it.

Grieg's A minor Concerto, first movement, or third, its your choice. i personally fell in love with the first movement, its melody is beautiful, and the piece itself is brilliant in its simplicity (note-wise)
