You should always play what you love, regardless of difficulty.

Just if it's easier, make sure you play them better.

Agreed with above.  What matters more is the quality of performance.  An easier piece played well is much more pleasurable to listen to than a virtuosic piece played badly.

The technique required for the preludes may be easy, but there is much to dig into with regards to expression, phrasing, and the character you wish to set for each.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

What competition?  What types of 'harder' pieces will you be preparing for it?

Depending on the competition, you may want to showcase more of your technical abilities than the preludes alone allow.

If you play the preludes well, a knowledgeable jury will see that; however, if another competitor comes along and plays something more difficult just as well as you played the preludes, you might be wasting your time.  Could it also be that your teacher wants to improve some of your technical skills with different pieces than the preludes?

In all other cases I can think of I'd wholeheartedly agree with the above advice -- play what you love.
