Tie from one staff to another
on: November 17, 2007, 09:57:16 PM
I would like to know how this is written, or if it is at all possible. Suppose I have 4/4 time, and on the last beat of the last bar of a staff, I want a half note. I would need a crotchet there tied to another crotchet on the next bar, but if it's at the end of the staff, how do I tie it?
 Thanks!

By end of the staff I assume you mean "end of the piece"?

If so, write in an extra bar, and have rests after, or add a "pick-up" bar at the beginning of 3 beats, so you can write in one bar of 1 beat at the end.
Cogito eggo sum. I think, therefore I am a waffle.

You would start a "tie" on the first note of the tie, but don't connect it to anything (it's connected to the "air"), and then you will have a tie coming out of nowhere on the first note of the next line (I am calling "line" what I think you are calling "staff").

I found an example on this webpage here :

(scroll down to "When the Saints" and you will see a few examples of what (I believe) you are asking).

What you call a staff, is probably better referred to as a "system".

Eg: A string quartet has 4 staffs.

Staff 1: Vln 1
Staff 2: Vln 2
Staff 3: Vla
Staff 4: Vc

No matter what page of that string quartet Staff 2 = violin 2.

A page can however have multiple systems - the equivalent be called lines in written language.

Eg: Bar 85 is located on the 2nd system on page 3, where on staff 3 (viola) plays an A.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
