Alistair Hinton's sense of humour
on: November 26, 2007, 11:31:06 PM
We all love him or love to hate him, let's selebrate it in a topic with a word misspelt on porpoise and some grammar incorrect so he can correct us!

Who's "we"?

Ayway, "porpoise" is spelt correctly even if "decrepid" is not; that's a shame, really, since decrepitude is so characteristic of you that it probably better deserves a correcet spelling than does "porpoise" in this context...

"Lad noise"; now there's some really bad mis-spelling (or is there?)

There he goes again on his own, going down the only road he's ever known.

Whether or not I go anywhere on my own or in company and why and when are just three of many things that happen to be none of your business, but at least some of us know the direction in which we seek to go, whereas others of us (no names mentioned, of course) would apparently not recognise any purposeful (or do I mean "porpoiseful"?) direction even if one bit them on the nose...

It must have been a slow day down at the Sorabji Archive.

Regretfully, their phone number is very similar to that of the local garage, so whilst he may have not sold many scores today, he has got to do a service on a Nissan Micra.

There will always be a place for his unique wit on this forum.

You might be surprised at how little time I spend on such things, actually - and what makes you think I actually "type" those words? Anyway, it's hardly your problem, is it? (always assuming that it is a problem of any kind in the first place, which it certainly isn't for me, thanks).

The speed of the day has seemed remarkably similar to that of other days, as it happens.

There are many "local garages" here in Bath and, whilst one of them shares part of its name with me (albeit not with the archive itself), none has any discernible similarity to our telephone number. Selling scores is but one of our activities. If I ever serviced anything so grotty as a Nissan Micra, its owner would surely regret it sufficiently to want to sue (and probably not without very good reason).

There will always be a place for his unique wit on this forum.
And for yours, "old chap"...

That may or may not be the case, depending on the particular stance of the person expressing a view on it, but I have often found that days tend to be remarkably similar in length and that each hour is very similar in duration to those on either side thereof; hardly an earth-shattering discovery, of course, but an incontrovertible fact, nevertheless...

No (never heard of them - is that some Middle eastern outfit?), I mean "Hinton Garage"; absolutely no connection with me, especially as they are, I believe, Vauxhall dealers...

Actually they are not similar in length since some studies claim that the spin of earth slows down resulting in increase of each day by 1.7 milliseconds per century the time shift is over a minute per century.

"Some studies" only - but OK, fair comment, as far as it goes; well, just give me a few million centuries more and I may eventually come to appreciate the effects of that in practice. I'll keep you informed...

Welcome to Hintons of Bath.

A free recording of Soraji's OC (not the Madge and we can only pray that Powell records it soon, but perhaps he needs to do another few practice runs first as he has only played it 5 times, 4 of which i have attended), with every car.

Available for a limited period only.

And may I return the compliment by welcoming the mad Thalbergs of Fin des Graves!

Available not at all, I fear. For one thing, we do not supply cars. For another, we do not supply either of the Madge recordings of OC. Thirdly, I rather doubt that you have actually attended all four (or do I mean any?) of Jonathan Powell's public performances of OC. Lastly, however, whilst I am not sure that prayer is what will do the trick (although you could perhaps ask your dearly beloved Susan about that), it is indeed very much to be hoped that Jonathan will record the piece soon. Ah, well - one out of four's not so bad, one may suppose, at this time of night...

For the sake of understanding, I really should point out that I don't actually set out to do that kind of thing for the sake of so doing, you know! I simply try, in each case, to address whatever it may be that I have seen, in the best way that I think I can. Sometimes that may turn out to sound as though "kicking ass" is actually happening, but I'd prefer to think that, when censuring of another member's post seems to have become appropriate and necessary, the writer has actually already kicked his/her own ass simply by writing in the way that he/she has done, thereby making it entirely unnecessary for a respondent such as me to do it for him/her.

That said, I think that we each almost certainly know of whom we are writing here, without any need to name names...

I can well imagine that; after all, you have indicated in your own words your desire to urge people to pray for Mr Powell to make that recording soon and, in the light of those many so many jibes and carps at the religiously oriented posts of one Susanistimo for which you are so well known, your call to prayer (of all things) must carry especially immense weight (not that you'd know much about the carrying of immense weight, of course). Please try not to allow that suspense to end your valuable and much appreciated life, however; if you did so, not only would we all henceforward miss your unique contributions to this forum but you would also miss being able to listen to that recording when it finally does emerge.

Since no date or venue has yet been set for Jonathan Powell's recording of OC, I am unable to confirm any page-turning arrangements, but your kind offer - duly noted and deeply appreciated - will be borne in mind when the time approaches.

The price that you quote is certainly most generous, even if the first part thereof happens to strike Sorabji's executor and archivist as rather yuk-making...

I will keep you informed!

Hinton really seems out of place on a forum full of idiots.

This forum is not full of idiots. There are a few who stand out more than the others, who don't really need naming, but mostly the forum has nice, educated people.
