Did the USA put people on the moon in '69?
on: November 28, 2007, 10:17:45 PM
Since the USA has a large history of deceiving people for their own advantage, is that 'landing on the moon' not just another scam?

Ofcourse its pretty impossible to have a decent discussion about this, but im curious about what most people think.

One of the strongest bits of evidence that the landing took place was that the dust storm raised by the Apollo spacecraft landing on the moon, and taking off again, was big enough to be seen by quite modest telescopes in various countries. Obviously that doesn't prove that men were there, but it was a man-sized thing that landed.

Can't believe at least half of the people are having doubts. And a nagging voice in my head says that those are the exact same people as the people that doubt the theory of evolution and that think Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 which they also believe to be the largest terrorist act ever.

In order to believe the moon landing is fake, you have to disregard the following empirical facts:

- The retroreflector mirrors installed on the moon by Apollo 11, 14, and 15, are observable from earth for testing purposes.

- The hundreds of kilograms of rocks were brought back from the moon (and are 700m years older than any on earth).

- Dozens of sightings of Apollo vessels were made by independent observers, including extensive observations made by Soviet authorities.

Gee...really makes you wonder!

Aside from proponents of violent and extreme ideologies, conspiracy theorists are the next group of people I loathe the most.  It takes a certain level of ignorance, credulousness, wickedness, and downright stupidity to buy into these disgusting rantings.

I know what you mean. But to my mind the main objection to grand conspiracy theories is that, on any amount of evidence in the daily news of this and any century, most of the people alleged to be involved in these conspiracies clearly couldn't conspire to brew a cup of tea.

We actually already had a thread on this.  I started the thread because I read about the conspiracy theory--I never knew there was a conspiracy theory until recently--but when people pointed me to the evidence, I became convinced that the US really did land on the moon.

Okay, now I have read some facts that says the U.S actually did land on the moon. What are the things the conspiracy theorists talk about then? I have heard that it looks like the flag moves, as if there was wind, and that it was weird that you could see no stars in the background. Again, this is what I have heard, I have not seen the footage, so I'm not accusing anyone here.

Conspiracy theorists point out lots of things.  They say the Van Allen radiation belts would have killed the astronauts.  They say all sorts of things about the lighting, the flag, the stars.......and they say the way the astronauts walked it was like they were suspended by cables like in the movies.  And they say all the backgrounds on the moon pictures are the same even though the astronauts are in different locations.  They have lots of arguments.  But NASA can refute them all.  For example, the flag looked like it was moving but really it was crumpled.  And the reason the background in all the shots is the same is because of "paralax"-- I'll let you look that one up.  Etc, etc.....

What we really need is another Mars landing.  No one has been there since Britney Spears went there in 1998 to film her "Oops I did it again" video.
