What does it mean when you have one quarter note and another right next to it (to the right) just like it but smaller in size?

It can can either an appoggiatura or acciatura, or rather, a simple misprint.

Its probably a misprint, but we do , as mentioned already, need an example. To the left of the note, it probably would have been a grace note.
