Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
on: December 06, 2007, 07:15:47 PM
I am finding the differences among editions puzzling. If you would be so kind, I would love to look at any public domain editions you may have.  I am working off Palmer at the moment, which seems well researched, but a little biased.

Thanks.

This horrific piece of music is included in the pianostreets library, which means we cannot post.

Sorry. Thal

Imo it's a great work, both showing the grandness  of the Tsaristic Russia, but also the sad, poor part of Russia, all nicely formed in a neatly structured piece. Especially when a performer does justice to the work it's extremely effective. To play it's sometimes a bit awkward, but it can be extremely beautiful at times. The Catacombs have that eerie feeling, the last movement begins with the epic colours of the to-be-built Gate of Kiev, it then proceeds into a moment of tragedy, because it was never built.

You can dislike it, but it's definitely NOT a horrific piece of music.

Now on-topic :P , it's not allowed to post it here, but maybe you can look in a sheet music shop for the Wiener Urtext edition? I have it, it's pretty clean, no fingerings (only in the preface by Ashkenazy, he gives some of his fingerings), and it's seems to be Urtext. Henle also has an edition, so maybe you can compare those two?

Thoughtful responses.

I have a profound issue with the disallowance to post editions other than Pianostreet's, particularly in cases as this, where the aim is not just to get the notes, but to do comparative analysis of multiple sources.

If the policy is not not allow such a posting, then the policy stinks.  What si the edition available here in pianostreet?  That and no other edition should be disallowed.

Thanks for the ideas re Wiener and Henle.  At some point I had those in my hand years ago, but now I don't recall the details.
