Medtner Solo Suggestions?
on: December 07, 2007, 02:14:44 AM
I rank Medtner up there with Rachmaninov.  Which is saying something.

I've got tons of recordings, so I'm familiar with a good deal of his output.

But I've played nothing.

Could those of you out there who have worked on Medtner suggest some great pieces to tackle?

Could you tell me what you like about them and discuss the technical challenges?

I'd appreciate it.

Oh, yeah, I'm advanced level, so throw anything at me.

I'm working on Op 39.  Beautiful, tricky piano writing though and very effective I might add.  But very fun to play when you become comfortable with the pieces.

Maybe try out some Fairy tales.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

The Fairy Tales (Skazki) are very nice pieces. I like the Op. 20 set the most.

medtner has a fair amount of good music, though I find his production in general less appealing than rachmaninoffs. some works worth taking a look at, nevertheless:

sonata-skazka op 25 (no 1? 2?)
sonata remeniscenza
skazkas: op 20, op 35 no 4, op 42 no 1-2, and the one that Horowitz recorded, forgot the opus but it's in a major...

Sonata Romantica is one of my most favorite late Romantic period pieces.

You say you have many Medtner recs?
I'm going to get Hamelin's rec of the complete sonatas on hyperion.
Are you familiar with these and how do they rank up in your opinion?
Medtner, man.

They are truly boring performances, note-perfect but he doesn't seem to really grasp the music. For some truly profound and good Medtner you should get a few Gilels recordings of the Sonatas, Sudbin has a nice recording of the first piano concerto and an von Eckardstein disc has just been released which is supposed to be very good (Night Wind sonata :O ) .

Hamelin's Medtner isn't perfect, but it's the best set out there. Better than Tozer, even, who can be a bit shallow and anti-climactic.
