What are the best conservatories?
on: December 07, 2007, 10:47:51 AM
I'm thinking Juliard and RCM isn't that bad. .

My friend says if I want to study Classical music I should go Germany. . He says because the orchestra (BPO) is good so they should be quite good in their Classical music. Any ideas?

Well Amsterdam (where I'm studying) is pretty good, much international teachers, nice people. Moscow is probably insanely good, pity you have to be able to speak Russian. In the US you have Yale, Curtis etc which are supposed to be very good too.

Sankt-Petersburg, I think, also used to be in the elite bunch during the 20th century, don't know about today, though.

German conservatories... Leipzig, possibly. Haven't heard much good about the rest.
Vienna would also be rather good.

the RCM music school in toronto is good. Juliard, I hear about people wanting to go there all the time.

did you know that if you make it into a German consevatory, you can take your B.A degree for free!! actually that applies to any of the colleges or uni's there.
but the thing is Germans' love Bach. My teacher studied there and 50%+ of her rep was all Bach  :P

What I heard from my teacher who used to go during the comunist era that the quality is different now.

How about Chinese conservatories? There must be good ones, because they produce so many excellent pianist.

The good American conservatories are mostly filled by Asian kids. It seems very few caucasian kids get into top conservatories in the States. I wonder what causes this?
Is it because no money being a classical musician?

There are so many generalizations in throughout this whole post... I go to oberlin conservatory. I'm not asian. There are a lot of non-asians in conservatories. Although there also are a lot of asians in conservatories as well. And its who you study with, not where you study. I believe in that 100%. I have a friend who got in everywhere, turned down julliard, cim, new england, manhattan, everywhere. To go to Indiana. Because he had a better relationship and understanding with teh professor.

I think I have to be more specific...I mean piano major...Not dancing, singing, wood wind etc.
Again, piano...

Moguilevsky teaches there right? My teacher studied with him, and she says he was awesome! Rzewski teaches composition there I think.

But most of the Chinese go overseas to study- to places where they can get government grants and stuff. At the one conservatoire here in the UK i went to an open day for, the piano department was spot the non-oriental student.

Can't agree more ... the Paris conservatory sucks, their teachers sucks as well, and they are poor pianists. I heard one in recital this year and ... well, no commentary.

I didn't say the conservatory sucks, nor the teachers and students.

The country sucks!

What about Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory? I see their calendar has a lot of various masterclasses all around. . I think Chinese conservatories are not that bad. . Like the Central Conservatory in China Beijing or Tianjin Conservatory. .

That's not true. France is a lovely country.  About Brussels, indeed Moguilevsky teaches there, also Faerman, Daniel Blumenthal and Vodenitcharov.
It's a good school I think.

I studied at the Peabody Institute (U.S.A) and the Royal College of Music (England). They're both first rate.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
