What's your best musical talent?
on: December 19, 2007, 07:10:02 AM
What's your best musical talent? eg. visual/aural memory, instant playing from conductor scores, sight reading, fast fingers... etc.

What are the pros and cons to have it?

For myself, aural memory.
I can easily remember a piece from beginning to end and it helps me practicing. ;)
If there's a piece sounds interesting and appealing to me, I can't stop playing it in my head if I'm not focusing.  :P Sometimes I need to think to myself 'ok, stop thinking it, I need to sleep...'  It's quite distracting when I'm doing non-music exams.

btw, do I need some psychiatry?  :P

Um...no -- its a joke! A Kazoo is a toy wind instrument that has a membrane that makes a sound when you hum into the mouthpiece. As a result, it's your humming that produces the tone. If you hum off key, the Kazoo plays off key.

Haha, they sound terrible in my opinion. My friends got kazoos and wandered around school for a few days with them, I almost screamed.

My best musical talent is probably sightreading. I'm not wonderful, but most of the time I can read a piece all the way through with very few difficulties. (If the piece isn't too hard for me to play normally of course.)

I have never seen one (kazoo) before.  ???

What's the downside of having good sight reading skills? I'm curious. :)

Here is a kazoo: (sorry about the size)

About the sightreading, I'm not sure myself, because I find it pretty useful, but I have never been able to memorise as well as the people I know who can't sight read as well. That could be because I tend not to like relying on my memory, and if I memorise it's because of my finger muscles remembering where to go, not because of lots of mental work on my behalf.
