Tooth Implant
on: December 23, 2007, 04:10:13 PM
I had one done Quite a horrible experience so far.

I'm quite nervous it will fail and all the pain and money will be for no reason at all.

Anyone got one? shudders.

Where'd they put it? Sounds painful.

I've considered having them filed down a bit, but that's permanent.

Having your real teeth or an implant filed down?

They drill a hole into your jaw bone and place the titanium screw in there.

Ask them to put you to sleep while they do it, not just the local anesthetic.

I wanted it done while awake, so i chose local. Its safer, and he is a very good surgeon. He told me what he was doing and keeps a calm tone which is calming in turn for the patient.

the pain came after( :

Ahh - dentists, poor sods, you've got to feel sorry for them. They try to help us out and we all hate 'em. Mine did a root-canal treatment on me and the anaesthetic didn't numb all the nerves, so he had to give me another quick jab right into the nerve. I'm lucky, I've got a high pain threshold, but I'd swear _he_ looked slightly green as he lined up the syringe.

hahaha. Sorry Im not laughing at your pain. I agree. Poor sods. I think that dentists were the type of children that used to watch ants squirm while they focused the rays of the sun on them through a magnifying glass.

My tooth was extrated because my dentist screwed up a root canal. He looked green in the face as well when he told me it would have to be taken out.

Oh well. I now have moved to a guy known as the dentist's dentist. hehe.

Well, I suppose we could all go back to the 1920s, the days when my grandfather, as a young man, had all his teeth out and a set of falsies fitted, just because it was the fashionable thing to do. I never knew him all that well (he died when I was still a teenager) but he always seemed fairly sane to me, otherwise....

Real teeth.  To make them perfectly even.

I love how they always say "you'll feel a slight pinch" before the local anesthetic...  But it actually feels more like they're sticking a needle into the gums, the liars!

I've got a couple of cavities, I've been procrastinating on the dentist for a few years now, should be fun I wonder what he'll find!

Into the gums?  When I had dental work done, it felt like they were jamming a needle far up into the roof of my mouth.  Ugh....

I agree with the needle thing. I am a little scared of needles, and I really didn't want my dentist to give me one when I had a tooth extracted (Im glad now that I did). She told me just to close my eyes, I'm just going to have a closer look, I said 'You arent going to put a needle in are you?' and she answered me with 'No, now shhhh...'

The lying pregnant dog. It hurt.

I don't mind the needle so much, but the general woozy sensation that (for me) always accompanies anaesthetic is pretty unpleasant. I'll live with it, though, in preference to no anaesthetic.

Well, I managed I think to make it 20 years, maybe 21 or 22, between visits to the dentist and when I did get there I needed two extractions (one of a tooth that had long ago crumbled away - perhaps surprisingly, it never caused me any pain at all), a root canal treatment and a minor filling. Not too bad a total, I thought. Took about 3 visits to get the lot sorted out and, to his everlasting credit, the dentist didn't even offer the hint of a raised eyebrow at the length of time it had been since I last saw one of his colleagues.

Rather calming. I am asking myself if implants are really better than other substitutes  :-\

Yeah, apparently they are very good. They maintain the bone on your jaw so it doenst wear away. My only worry is that i girnd my teeth. which can be a problem. Also im not really sure what the bone graft entailed, just hope it works. The pain has gone fo now. it was pretty quick , im must say that, but theres still work to be done. They seem to be a better option than bridges. Bridges mean the effective end of the two teeth on either side of the bridged tooth. Plates are an option, but i could not speak with mine in, but there are better plates on the market that should not interfere with speech.
