Hi Goalevan,

I own the DVD Shine.  it's probably my favorite movie related to the piano.  Watch it if you like Rachmanninoff's or Liszt's music.  I would also watch it if I liked David Helfgott, which I do.  BUtdon't rent it...that's expensive nowadays.  BUY it, but not on DVD, the bonus features are not worth it.

a good movie, rather moving, rather disgusting and wierd at times.

also rather funny. if you like bouncing quasi-naked men.

It is a good movie. But it is more about overcoming incredible difficulties, than about playing the piano. A much better movie is:

32 Short movies about Glenn Gould

(and, no, I am not a Glenn Gould fan).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Hi Bernhard,
I found that Glenn Gould movie quite boring.  You are correct, however about Shine not being about piano  playing so much.

There is an excellent Documentary-Interview with Sviatoslav Richter called "The Enigma".  Have you seen it?

32 Short movies about Glenn Gould
-available at local video store?

also, are there really many blockbusters purely about piano? The pianist was mostly about the holocaust.. as any movie would be about overcoming some sort of adversity

Yes, I actually have Enigma. It is indeed excellent. Richter is not one of my favourite pianists (although he is often a very interesting one). I really liked his attitude and philosophy of life. The director, Bruno Monsaingeon also wrote a book based on his conversations with Richter, but I have no read it. He appears in the Glenn Gould movie in some of the interviews (he actually made several documentaries with pianists).

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

It is available at my local video store... (and at the library).

You are right, usually the piano and pianists are just background to more entertaining drama :(

"The competition" and "Mme. Sosatzka" come to mind as more piano-oriented movies.
