can anyone recommend good short showpieces to play for a level recital? for a non musical audience who would be bored by the likes of bach etc

Standbies:

HRs, Liszt Etudes, Prok 7-3+ Diabolique Suggestion, Petrouchka.

How about a little Strauss Waltz transcripion?

Something everyone will have heard of.

Reger's Blue Danube is fantastic.

It is old boy, but it is also 9 minutes and bleedin difficult.

Too much for the ears of the uninitiated? I was thinking about Grunfeld or Schutt.

Reger's Blue Danube is fantastic.

I have to agree with Thal that it's very tough. I'd say Cziffra's version is easier, frankly.

Offhand, I'll suggest Schubert-Tausig Marche Militaire and Moszkowski Etincelles.

i've always thought macdowell's etude no. 12 "ungarische" is a good encore type piece...

i just listened to the recording i have of this and realised how much faster it needs playing. Becker's playing seems grossly slowed down for the sake of accuracy...

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
