I believe, that ability leads to confidence. So if the student learns to play in a pleasing way (for the player himself as for the listener), he/she will increase self-confidence.

Make sure the things they do they are successful at.
Make sure they sound good.
Make sure they have a good concept of what they're doing, what's good, where they are, what they do well/poor, what they need to work on, etc.
Makre sure they make progress.
I'm still up in the air about completely informing a student. If they don't understand the amount of work things take or the level they're at, I'm thinking that's not necessarily a bad thing. Esp for a young student, how motivating is it to know it will take a huge amount of effort to improve? On the other hand, having them be ignorant or dependent on the teacher for what's good and bad isn't a great idea either.
Performances. As long as they're going in prepared and getting something out it, it's success in my book.
I suppose having long and short term goals goes along with that stuff too.
