Flute pieces

I'm looking for some nice sounding or beautiful flute pieces, from any era. Preferably about intermediate-early advanced level. Even if it isn't the actual score, just the name and composer, it would still be an immense help, all my teacher has told me is to go to a music store and get a book, but I don't have the money at the moment. I also think why buy a whole book of pieces if you aren't going to play all of them?

Um, sorry for the mild hijack, but would it be possible to somehow include Prokofiev's op. 94 sonata into the bundle-to-possibly-come? (There is some cooperation with a flautist coming up and this one is definitely on the list...)

The Poulenc sonata is fantastic - it's not too hard and has what my accompanist called 'a proper piano part', rather than just putting the chords in appropriate places. I played it for my grade 8 exam a fair few years back.

As with most other things, you can't go far wrong with J S Bach sonatas, they're beautiful. Tricky to play really well but well worth the effort.

If you fancy a crack at a concerto, Mozart no 2 is one of the most well known, but the piano transcriptions of the orchestral backing aren't terribly inspiring pianistically.

I also loved the Reineke 'Undine' sonata. And the Prokofiev sonata is well worth it.

What else... depends how ambitious you and your flautist are, really! If you're after a serious encore piece, try Morlacchi's Il Pastore Svizzero. Your flute player will probably need to go for a bit of a lie down afterwards...

Oh, and did Schubert's Dry Flowers get mentioned so far? I gather that it is a rather major undertaking, but the result definitely is worth the effort.
