Looking for a teacher in London
on: January 07, 2008, 05:20:22 PM
Hi there,

I'm in the City, London UK and looking for a piano teacher. I have noticed that the hourly rates of piano teachers in London are quite varied and wondered if you think it is worth paying extra.

For example, near my home there is a piano teacher that charges £20 per hour.
Near my place of work there are teachers priced between £30 and £38 per hour.

Then there's https://www.thepianostudio.co.uk priced at £80 per hour.

Would my piano playing be substantially better by paying 4 times as much for Richard Meyrick? I'd be interested in your thoughts on how to select a piano teacher.

Thanks,
keymoo

Well, I contacted Richard Meyrick and he suggested that a one hour lesson every 3-4 weeks for a busy professional person is just the right balance. I'm learning the piano for my own personal pleasure, not for performing. I'm going for a lesson this week - he has a 2 year old 6 foot Bluthner grand piano - I'm really looking forward to playing on that!

Hello there Keymoo,

Well, for what's it worth coming from someone who is not British, let alone a Londoner, you can't lose much by taking Richard Meyrick for a test ride.

His website is very handsome and his background is impressive.

Good luck with your studies and see if you can steal a download of his "Finger Exercises" for us.  ;D

Thanks - I was speaking with some other people and it seems he's very well known in London and is an astonishing performer. He is very expensive, but I'm hoping it will be money well spent - I'll soon find out.
