Practice Rooms in Los Angeles area
on: January 11, 2008, 09:54:54 PM
Hey all, I just moved and I was wondering if there were any schools or universities or other institutions that had practice rooms open to the public in the Los Angeles area?

If you're lucky, you might be able to sneak in one or two at USC (where I go). People just come and go as they please there. However, you have to be a student to actually reserve a slot. I don't know of any places where you can just walk in and use a practice room for free that are open to the public. You could always walk into a piano store, act like you're going to buy something, and then ask to practice on one of the pianos. I'm sure they'll let you.

From 8 am to 8 pm, the doors are open. These are the times when people can reserve times, so there is a chance you might get booted. However, you are free to stay as long as you want if you are already in there by 8 pm and have a room. Students can keep coming in until 1 am with their card. You could even stay there all night past 1 if you want to. I've done it a few times myself.

Cool, USC is pretty far but I'll give it a shot sometime.

Whereabouts are you located? There might be better options I can think of in your area (I've lived here all my life, so I know LA pretty well, I think).

I'm living in the Marina Del Rey area right now. I tried UCLA, but there's a signup procedure and key involved, so no luck there.

Yeah don't go to UCLA. They suck. And their pianos do too.

I recall a very fine Grotrian concert grand in Royce Hall, what's become of it?

Royce Hall pales in comparison to Bovard Auditorium. Don't mess with USC. We have our own classical radio station. UCLA doesn't have that.

Those were the ancient Trojans. We Trojans of today are much stronger and better. Remember that football game?

So? We came back and beat you this year. And the year before last, and the year before last, and the year before last...

I hear USC has the best-looking girls in the country 8).

Besides, Stanford and Berkeley are the best schools in California.  UCLA is amazing too, but I don't know too much about USC.

Yeah we have some good looking girls.

I'd say that Stanford is pretty overrated, along with Berkeley. USC and UCLA are both very good schools and are easily some of the best in California.

When I look at grad schools, it all boils down to how they publish and the reputation they have.

It's a lot less ambiguous that way.
