No. But one time in college I was asked to join a group in a gig... playing double bass at a dance. I had never even touched one before! So I fooled around with it for an hour or so in my dorm room. Once on stage at the venue, I first tuned it with a bow, which made everyone take notice, thinking that I played in a symphony orchestra somewhere. Next, I positioned myself with a great viewing angle of the pianist's left hand. I then mirrored his bass harmonies all night. Occasionally, I'd also swivel the bass around a bit to catch the ballroom lights like the pros do. The pianist thought I was one of the best bassists he had ever played with, and wanted to know how long I had been playing the instrument!!! But I never had to play a xylophone all night! Growing up though, I did play the glockenspiel in a band, so maybe I could have faked the xylophone once I figured out the scale. I dunno.
So what did you end up doing?
