lesson fees for 2008
on: January 21, 2008, 04:26:10 PM
Hello

I was wondering if you all thought it's reasonable to raise lessons fees for 2008? I have been teaching for 11 years, have a masters degree, and currently charge £25-28 per hour as a home visit teacher in London.

When I visited the ISM site it recommends that teachers in London charge £24 and up as a newly qualified teacher so what I charge is rather low. Home visits are becoming rather cumbersome as I don't have a car.

I don't want to shock the students however, and thinking of raising fees by a pound or two. I haven't had to do this before, as I have always worked in a music school or a school, but wonder what would be the best way to approach the subject with private students.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you only increase £2 per hour per student, I do not think it is a big deal.
Unless your intention is to increase £5. In addition, you have to know your students' financial strength. If they barely able to afford piano lesson, you will have problem here.

Home visit lesson should always cost more....

I live in London, I'm a piano student and was thinking about teaching like you described. I know a lot of people who do it, and they charge 30 pound an hour. You could just say becasue of travel costs, and things like that you, are sorry to have to raise your prices by 2 pound. I don't think people will be that bothered, I mean most (dare I say) people in London who get piano lessons at 28 pound are rich lol. I'm sure that if the student does have financial troubke though you could stay at 25-28. I think if they are clearly rich, you should raise it, and if they are poor just stay the same.

Thats what I would do  :)
