Pierre-Laurent Aimard's new Bach CD
on: January 26, 2008, 05:45:47 PM
Has anyone else heard his new recording of Bach's The Art of the Fugue on DG? I really like it--he separates the voices with incredible clarity. Some may feel it's a bit intense and driven--perhaps exacerbated by the overly close mic placement, but he certainly produces compelling results. By contrast, Sokolov's is more soft-grained/lyrical and distantly recorded.

Have a listen to Nikolaeva's while you're at it!

I have it, and like it (but still need to listen more). I only heard 20th century stuff from Aimard so far (Ligeti, Messiaen), but with the delicate voicing required for some of those works my expectation was that Aimard would do a very good job and this would be a thrilling recording. Good to hear another modern-piano performance of this gorgeous work!!

I have heard Aimard play Bach before and he is indeed very good at playing such music. Playing modern works requires a high amount of clarity, which translates well into the Baroque works, in my opinion.
