wanted: opening piece for recital
on: January 27, 2008, 06:29:51 PM
Hi there, I'm looking for an opening piece for my recital which I give soon.  It sholud not be longer than 10 minutes. After it I will play the Duport Variations of Mozart, the two things should match. I thought about 2 Scarlatti Sonatas or maybe something of Bach but I don't really know what.
It would be great if someone here has made experiences with that and could give me some ideas what I could play.  :)
P.S. sorry for my english ::)

Mozart's Adagio in B minor.

I opened my recital last year with the bach-busoni chaconne.. probably a tad longer than what you want, but it makes a strong statement i reckon

One of my favourites is J.S. Bach's Fantasie and Fugue in A minor. If you want something slower, Mozart's Adagio is quite moving.

Thanks for your ideas. But I think I will choose one or two Scarlatti Sonatas. I played the Chaconne some times ago, but now it would be too long. Mozarts' Adagio is not bad, but I can't imagine myself playing it, don't know why.
Has someone ever started a concert with Scarlatti? I hope it's not boring for the audience.

I started a recital many years ago with 3 Scarlatti sonatas. My advice would be to start with a slower or moderately paced one rather than one of the superfast sonatas. It will help you ease into the performance, help your fingers warm up and also, since most people's adrenaline is pumping, you won't start one of the fast ones faster than you can handle. (Which is what happened to me way back when.  ;D )

And I can't imagine anyone thinking Scarlatti boring. His music is so interesting, dramatic, virtuosic, melodic, suprising, rhythmic, pulsing, languid....and that can all be found in just one of his 2 minute sonatas. Love Scarlatti.

Bachs Italian Concerto  F major. But at the moment I'm not sure how long it is...
My current pieces:
- Clementi - Gradus ad Parnassum - No. 9
- Liszt - un Sospiro
- Mendelssohn - Rondo Capriccioso op. 14

I recommend a Bach-Busoni Chorale Prelude.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Today in the piano lesson I made a decision with my teacher: We choose two Scarlatti Sonatas, Kk87 and Kk27, both in B minor. Thus the first is, like sharon_f suggested, a slower one.
@dnephi: interesting, my teacher also recommended first some Chorale Preludes by Bach-Busoni, but somehow they didn't convince me enouogh. Maybe another time...

Rachmaninoff Prelude op. 23 no. 5 would be great for a starting of a recital

but i think...the main concern is that whether the opening piece is gonna math with the rest of the programme. Would you please tell us what you are gonna playing next?

I don't know which level you are at, but i think Brahms' Rhapsody in G-minor, Op. 79, is a fantastic openingpiece, because it have a firm way of starting. Generally it sounds like an openingpiece.
It's a good contrast to the other piece too.
