Blowing up the size of sheet music?
on: January 30, 2008, 07:25:03 PM
Hey,
I am currently finding it a little troublesome to read the notes of some of the sheets I have downloaed from here, such as the bach. The stave size is definitely smaller to some of the other pieces I have had from here but I am not sure if it is just idelness or an actual limiting factor whilst learning thse pieces.
I was going to increase their size the other day when I wondered if by doing this I am creating a weakness in not being able to read a smaller size sheet. Could this be a problem and should I just stick with the size they happen to be? Or should I increase them in size to that of the other pieces and probably aid my learning?
     Thanks in advance.

I usually like small and compact when performing so I can read ahead more.  But for learning you are usually making constant references to the score to check notes.  If blowing it up makes the learning process easier, why not.

Really you should be able to see an entire score in once glance. So making the score bigger will reduce your ability to sight your music. Now this does not really affect beginner-intermediate students, but rather the late advanced students who have a good sight reading speed. So making the music larger for these advanced students would decrease efficiency of learning, but is negligible for others. I like to see the entire score of a piece I learn, so much so that I will paste all the sheets on a wall and color it in so I can see it in one go. I've always found this helpful for me ;)

Yeah I have chosen to stick with it's natural size as often many of these 'shortcuts' or 'aids' in learning end up causing problems further down the line.  It's funny you should mention the colour thing as I was thinking exactly the same the other day and how it might help me recognise the structure of the piece better.
     Thanks again.

Go to your print office and see if they have 11x 7 size paper. If so find out what tray it is in (probably Tray # 3).

If your file is an Adobe Reader file (.pdf) then with the music score on the computer screen do the following:

 1) Left click FILE      2) Left click  PRINT SETUP     3) Left click   PROPERTIES     4) Left click  PAPER    5)  Left click on the Size is:   (black triangle)      6)  Choose paper size  11x17     7)  Left click    OK       8)   Under Auto Select   left click on   TRAY 3        9)   Left click    OK    10) Left click on tht Left top    PRINT ICON       11)  Left click   OK   and wait 30 seconds for the Adobe program to process your request.

Complicated ... but it may work

You may also wish to select Scale to paper size, or something of the nature to make the 8.5x11 into 11x17
