Grieg.  Schonberg.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

I wouldn't be caught dead listening to Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom in public, but I think it's starting to grow on me.  :P

In this context surrounded by dead (pun) serious russians and germans I guess I should be ashamed for enjoying film music composers like Klaus Doldinger, John Williams, Danny Elfman, Enrico Morricone,Nino Rota, Leonard Berstein etc. Allthough in reality I would say they kick ass.

Well anyway I tell here in public, so what's the deal, I tell everybody. Quite hilarious contradictionary topic, hee hee  ;D Ohhh and of course, James Horner,  Mikkel Eriksen, Shaffer Smith, Tor Erik Hermansen ;D ;D And Freddy Mercury and John Lennon. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. And many more...

Even Ludwig van...

Richard Clayderman  ;D

Tim Hofman ;D ;D

Ahaha I have one more, he's not even a composer:

Stanford, Dyson, Atterberg, Alfven, Bantock, Gouvy, Korngold, Parry, Scharwenka, Ethel Smyth.

I'm not ashamed of any of these folks, mind you, but people often act like I should be.

I think there's very few composers that I wouldn't own up to listening to, irrespective of received wisdom on their merits. Perhaps the rondo of the Kalkbrenner D min piano concerto is a guilty pleasure?

Hehe, I once played Thalberg's Moses Fantasy (which is a piece I really do like very much) at a piano course, and after I finished (it ends with about 2 minutes of non-stop arpeggios) the guy running the course exclaimed "what UTTER GARBAGE!"

This thread did inspire me to leaf through my collection and try and find the worst piece by a serious composer. So far, Shostakovich's "The Assault on Beautiful Gorky" is leading comfortably.

He's a really nice guy, actually. I did look quite shocked (I was worried that he was commenting on my playing!), and he backed down a bit, saying "we mustn't forget it was the pop music of its time and as such it does the job it is supposed to".  I said to him "that's a bit harsh - if it was pop music, it would do this" and played the arpeggios with the modulation going up a semitone rather than from Bb to G.  ;D

He's grown to appreciate it a little more now, I think.

Well *** them!  :D

We like what we like and being ashamed of it is giving into those snobs. If they don't like it, who are they to look down on you. To each their own and live and let live. People get too invested in their own opinions.  ::)

Diabelli, Hook, Turk, Czerny, Pleyel

They're not hip or grand but such charming little pieces.

How about another thread for "Composers you find really Dreary
