on: February 06, 2008, 06:34:44 PM
but not necessarily romantic.

Trying to prepare a level recital and the only thing that will keep audience interested is virtuosity.

Umm...

-- Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - Flight of The Bumblebee
-- Villa-Lobos - O' Polichinello (from Suite Prole do Bebe)
-- Abram Chasins - Rush Hour in Hongkong
-- Rachmaninoff - Polichinelle (from Fantasy Pieces)

All of them are Virtuostic pieces.. But Polichinelle by Rachmaninoff is a little bit long..  :P

Chopin:  Opus 25, 11

Virtuosic, short, and a crowd pleaser.

Some of the Chopin Etudes or Liszt Transcendental Etudes would do good. For example No. 2,5  or No. 10 from the Transcendental Etudes.
Edit: Some stuff of "Valses nobles et sentimentales" from Ravel are also virtuosic and some of them short.
My current pieces:
- Clementi - Gradus ad Parnassum - No. 9
- Liszt - un Sospiro
- Mendelssohn - Rondo Capriccioso op. 14

Rachmaninoff Moment Musical op16/4.
Quite difficult (also musically), but fits the criteria^^

rachmaninoff etudes(some) would fit.

Generally a lot of etudes are quite virtuostic(and are quite short).
That's the price you pay for being moderate in everything.  See, if I were you, my name would be Ilovepie.  But that's just me.

But it a useful thread. My vote is for Rachmaninoff's Etude Tableaux op 39 #1 ("Waves") which is a virtuosic piece with complexity, richness and drama, but not impossible.

I heard Rustem Hayroudinoff play it on a cruise, along with several other. You can find an absolutely smashing performance on You Tube where RH plays R's piano concerto #3.

Palmgren's "En Route". Simple, under a minute, but sounds really difficult and fun to the general audience.
