i am not panicing
on: April 25, 2004, 03:07:12 AM
So um, recital wednesday, in 96 hours, 1st mov. Beethoven op. 106...

I'm still learning the notes for the recapitulated secondary theme in the tonic key (shame!) and bringing double trills in coda up to speed... otherwise I can play the notes, I am working on getting nice Beethovenish phrasing, very stong rhythm with and without metronome, and trying to conjure very deep tones for the deep parts, and  light leggerios for the leggerio parts... and fugue voicing for the fugue voices... all that stuff, usuals, I don't know... um? Any advice or consolation?

afterthought... is there a quasi-legato fingering for RH m. 89? Anyone?

::)

It's alright, I'm sure there are many people who like to leave stuff for the last minute. Just realize that because this is the case, that those parts may give you trouble during the performance just because they aren't as routine. Other than that, break a... well, good luck! And don't get nervous!

Tony, I believe nervousness cannot be controlled no matter how long you have been performing.  Telling someone not to get nervous may have the adverse effect.

Rach3- umm, you are in quite a fix now aren't you?  You should have organized learning of this piece better so you would have weeks to practice performing.
but... you are almost out of time now aren't you?  If you don't have time to learn all the notes well in such a short period of time, LEARN THE MAIN MELODY and use your knowledge and creativity to "fake" the rest- but fake well, and make the melody so projective and beautiful no one will pay attention to the fake stuff.  this is what I do when I panic on stage forgetting a bar or two...I don't bother trying to remember- I just keep a straight face and do tremolos or something in the key of the music.
If you play for an audience- most people wont be able to tell what you are up to, and if you play for an adjudicator or someone reading the music as you play, you will be praised for being a true performer.

Most important- It's ALL about appearance and atmosphere

good luck

donjuan, I don't thing you can fake Das Hammerklavier. At least I have no intention of trying... what would you have me do, improvise a four-part fugue?  I've just got a bit of finger practice work left in one specific recap passage... no biggie... I hope...

Thanks, Tony, by the time I'm finished with myself tonight they're GOING to be routine.  ;)

Good for you Rach 3!

...and congrats on learning one of Beethoven's grandest sonatas.

Donjuan you're probably right, but there's only so much support I can give from here ;) and besides Rach can't really imrovise on THAT sonata. Rach, as long as you're confident that should be one of the best weapons ion fighting off the doubts, and you do sound confident. With confidence comes certainty and if you play with certainty, then you will play well. Again, Good luck on performing Das Hammerklavier.
