Trying to give advice to a friend (music notes)
on: February 21, 2008, 05:54:44 PM
He's 17 yrs of age. And wants to be able to read music better.

I had made some flash cards for him (treble and bass). Is this a common method?

And the other thing I tried was giving him a score of music and just read the notes.. I told him not to worry about the rhythm.

Any more suggestions?

Learning to read music is simple: he only needs to practice.
It is important to correct his mistakes when he reads the notes.

Flash cards is quite a good idea. When I was younger my teacher used them, and it really helped.

Flash cards are a great idea and work well in helping students with sight reading.

Here are some flash cards that I modified for print out.

EDIT:  I have made some modifications to the posted file.

I realized that the stems on some of the cards are conventionally going the wrong direction.

I also numbered each one to make it easier to assign which ones you would like the student to concentrate on.
