Jazz Scores With CD
on: March 02, 2008, 03:07:18 PM
I’m a long time pianist but a fairly raw sight reader. Currently, I’m fascinated by jazz and lounge music, especially lush arrangements of familiar standards which can wow the crowd.
However, transcriptions of my favorites jazz standards pose real difficulties for me unless I have the actual recording of that particular arrangement to serve as a foundation for imitation.
Problem: I oftentimes find the cd without the transcription or I find the transcription without an accompanying cd.
Anybody know of any good jazz collections which include a cd of the actual scores. I have tried some of the play along cd’s and have been generally disappointed. They tend to be very basic and quite atrocious sounding, geared more for accompaniment as opposed to piano solos.
I’d prefer more advanced material—piano solo only. One book I’ve found, “Cocktail Piano Standards,” transcriptions played and arranged by Al Lerner fits the bill nicely. Know of any others?

It's not jazz, but ragtime. See:

. "Euphonic Sounds" is one of Joplin's more experimental pieces.
