Hello everyone! I have just purchased a Yamaha S08 and would like to learn to play piano. I know it's not the best but it was within my budget.

About Me: My main goal is to eventually be able to play by ear (in 2-5 years time if possible). I would also like to be able to read sheet music though. I took lessons as a child for about 6 months. I am able to hear the difference between Major and minor scales and chords. That is where my knowledge ends though. I cannot hear the difference between intervals and I don't know how to tell which chord is being played in a song (Augmented, suspended, 7th, etc).

My question is what beginner’s book do you all recommend? I am looking for a book that will include basics like scale fingerings, etc. I know that there isn't a single book that can teach you piano from beginning to end but I am just looking for something to start out on. Also I know that learning on my own is not recommended but have a teacher is not an option right now. My budget right now for a book is around $50. I am willing to spend more if there is a good reason to do so.

Thank you all for any help/suggestions :)

I've run into the same problem.  I've purchased the Alfred's Adult All In One Course.  This is for the beginning adult.  I have no piano background and the book starts out very simple.  There are 2 versions of this book...one with the CD for 19.99 and the without for 15.99
I've had the book since Nov. 07 and I'm not even half way through it.  It's a challenge for me and I don't even turn the page until I COMPLETELY understand the technic, theory and practice.
My 4 year old daughter takes lessons at one of our local music shops and, believe it or not, even her books are a help...and alot easier to play :).

I'm sure there are other beginner books....try a local "Borders" or "Barnes and Noble"...or call one of your local music shops and ask what they suggest.

Good luck,
Chip

There's a great online course (you have to download the videos, mp3s, programs and pdf ebooks) which costs less than that but it's better than many methods out there because it is very complete. If you don't progress within a month you're refunded your money.
