All,

I am preparing for an amateur competiton, and one of the requirement is to play one of Bach piece. Originally, I would like to play one of the WTC 1. However, after listening to all of them, I really do not find any one of them that I like. Therefore, I would like to choose other Bach music. I have question regarding the level of Italian Concerto, Partita, English or French suites? Do people consider these three works to be higher level than WTC or equal? The reason I ask this is that I have to play at least WTC level and above.

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

Higher.  Btw, have you thought about the French Overture or the Chromatic Fantasy et Fugue?

I'm not completely sure about the French Suites. I have seen them listed on some syllabus just below the WTC.  Why not have a listen to WTC 2? There might be something there you might like. (I love both the E-flat major and the F minor from that book.)

Agreed.  There are some gems in WTK Bk II.  You are right, no. 12 in F is one of the best IMO.

How much do you have to play?  For instance, a would you play a complete French suite or a few pieces?

In Van Cliburn Amateur Competition, Paris Competition, Boston Competition or most amateur competitions, we can play one part of big work, for example we can play only the Allamande of a French Suite. So the selection is very free, basically one needs to show off as much as possible in a short time. Thanks so much for the help.

Finally, I decided to play WTC1 No. 21 B flat.
