Where are you going on holiday this year?
on: March 13, 2008, 07:42:30 PM
I'm off on my hols seven weeks tomorrow... not that I'm counting the days or anything! It's been about three years since I had a holiday that was just going to be a break and wasn't going to involve large furry toothy animals and a camera with a very long lens...

Although it still might, I'm off to Scotland, I have a cottage on the west coast for a week which apparently has pine martins living in the garden, then I'll be in Inverness for a few days and Glasgow for a few days. I'm going to go Nessie-spotting - it's a cliche but never mind!

And my 'cottage' has a decent grand piano that the owner is going to have tuned for me before I arrive... so hurrah for that too! No neighbours to annoy and a proper piano. I have a digital piano at home and although it serves its purpose it's not a proper piano.

Where is everyone else going on their travels this year? Or, indeed, are you going travelling? I didn't last year, didn't have time or budget to go away... another reason I'm looking forward to the first two weeks in May!

Me and Mental Martin are going to the Orkneys on 3rd April for a couple of weeks.

The West coast of Scotland is beyond beautiful and i have spent many a nice holiday at Durness and surrounding area. The best areas are north of Loch Ness, where there are not so many tourists. This is also a very good time to go as it is too cold for the dreaded midges.

Some highlights on the west coast would have to include Sandwood Bay, Handa Island, Cape Wrath and the magnificent mountains in and around Suilvan.

Nessie spotting is best on the "Foyers" side, where you can find a nice remote little place to set up your camera away from the crowds that normally congregate around Urquhart Castle on the other side of the Loch.

Where abouts are you staying Elspeth?

I'm off to Germany again this summer.

One of my cousins is getting married.

We are going to spend a few days in Brussels on the way there.

On the edge of Loch Gairloch - there's two places on its edge called Shieldaig and Badachro, and I'm staying more or less half way between the two. Scotland is so beautiful... hopefully I'll have some nice pics to post when I get back! Although if I manage to photograph Nessie, you'll probably see the pics in the papers first...

I've been to Scotland twice.

The first time was with a nutty Glaswegian mate.
A weekend of too much alcohol.
I know this because I have little memory of those few days.

Then we went there on our Honeymoon.
We toured up the East coast, round the top, then down the West coast.
It was great. And I remember most of it.

The drive along the top of Scotland is my favourite drive.

Not a bleedin camera or cop car in sight.

I borrowed a car from work for the trip. Yes it was a lot of fun.

There is a stretch of dual carriageway just outside of Thurso, where it is just possilble and safe to do 150mph.
