Essay suggestions?
on: March 16, 2008, 07:45:58 AM
"A study of the piano in the 21st century and why the piano must continue to evolve if it is to remain a vital musical force" I will be focusing on what inspired Wayne Stuart to create the Stuart & Sons piano. I will be talking about the need for a new, fresh and distinctive voice in expressive piano music and how the S&S piano achieves the new quality of sounds through new pedals, notes, length of strings etc. I would also like to look at examples of music played on this piano and how music such as Debussy would sound on this new 21st century instrument.

I am just asking for suggestions, maybe instead of focusing on Stuart and Sons I can talk about other pianos that are aiming for the same thing. Is this too much for a 3000 word essay? Can anyone give me names of books, or links to interviews and websites talking about this subject.

Although I'm not familiar with this new instrument, I would suggest that at a third of your 3000 word essay should include a concise history of the modern piano. Not much has changed, in terms of the piaos basic construction, over the few decades.

Perhaps an arguement could be made that any major changes would result in a new  instrument, with a new name. Your oncoming essay sounds like a complex project... best of luck.

I wonder how much more the modern piano and really evolve.  I'm thinking things are going in an electronic direction.

I believe that's called "degeneration."

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
