Favorite recording of Liszt's "Dante Sonata"?
on: March 19, 2008, 04:49:47 AM
So far I'm going with Leif Ove Andsnes...

Thoughts?

Best,

Ryan.

I have an out-of-print Alfredo Perl recording which is quite enjoyable. I've never heard a *bad* recording of this piece.

Leif Ove Andsnes IMO, great sound and intensity. Man, I just love this piece, it's just amazing.

I agree on the Cziffra, but my favorite serious recording is Lazar Berman.

I'll go with Andsnes as well. I think Cziffra and Berman are far too harsh with the piece and don't use enough contrasts.

John Ogdon on Altarus (rec. about 1985).

Ahh, I haven't heard the one, but judging by the short video available on youtube, and my extreme fascination with this pianist, I expect it's quite good.

I second this.

Stanislav Yovanovitch 1980 recording - A "Fantstic pianomaster" (2008). Spooky and seductive, wonderful sound. Far ahead of Berman, Barenboim, Brendel and probably Hough - that's always too fast.

I think the Dante Sonata is Liszts worst work to be honest. Barenboim played it in his recent Liszt Centenary concert.  I had recorded it and wound through it.  I also wonder if his recital was really that badly put together?  The textures and tempi were so similar.

Can anyone suggest an all Liszt recital which would work well?  Not that I could perform it - but from a concert going perspective.  Make me buy a ticket!
