Anyone actually have a roll up piano?
on: March 22, 2008, 10:29:40 PM
I just an ad for one.  Again.

They're so, so awesome.  Professional quality at a low, low price.   ::)

A toy I can see.  Maybe as a tool.  If it's more portable.  It's got MIDI.

Does anyone here actually have one though?

It is really amusing to watch the advertisements though.  Very easy to see what they cover up and how to promote it.  Hey parents -- But this roll up piano and you're kids will be successful and happy in life.  I guess it's just that easy.

And it's by the "master" musician that I've never heard of.   8)  Not until this commerical.  So lucky I caught it today.

But seriously -- Is it useful at all?

Portability sounds attactive.  I'm thinking in terms of ear training.  However... Am I really going to do serious work like that?  Dragging around some little crappy keyboard to do ear training on the fly?  I doubt it.

Even with the portability -- I can just go buy a cheapy $10-20 keyboard that doesn't roll up but is just as easy to tote around.  And just as potentially dorkifying.

So, anyone have it, and use it more seriously than a toy?

I think, yes it's a toy.

How can you benefit from something that really bearly resembles a real piano at all.

It just looks a bit like one.

So does a Zebra crossing.

A zebra crossing what, exactly? Seriously , though, I'm not one to talk here, since, as a non-pianist, I always used to think (as a kid) that an upright piano was a mere toy-like (mis)representation of the real thing. And just to make matters worse still, I once said to someone "why write for the piano when you can write for the Bösendorfer 290?!" (and I'm nevertheless on the lookout for something that will eclipse even that in potential expressive range)...

Complete waste of money.

Don't touch it.

A way off relative bought me one for my birthday and it really doesn't work. I wouldn't even get it for composing: too much hard work. The keys are incredibly unsensitive and they are probably going to cause serious damage to your fingers.

Also, the model I have doesn't have a power supply or a speaker and relies solely on its USB connection. Which means that you would have to take a computer around with you to use it. So much for portability.

It's a bit like smashing an individual finger against a brick wall really (or at least a desk).

Rhapsody.

And when its not unfurled, he might just hit someone over the head with it (though not you, Thal, of course!)...

Something about it seems too good to be true.  I was wondering with all that portability if you would have a comfortable flat surface to put it down.

I always enjoy Alistair's dry humor (or "humour", as they say, from whence he hails).  ;D

i played on one on an airport gadget shop. Its totally useless. You have to slam on it a couple of time before it notices that its supposed to make some dorky sound. The black notes are even worse :p
