Spring - Printemps - Frühling - Primavera...
on: March 27, 2008, 11:41:51 AM
Dear forumeers,
I hope this doesn't sound like a too cheap or stupid question.  I find myself playing rather dark, sad, romantic, very classic repertoire, lento, heavy repertoire, a little flashy, a little 'pleasing';  Nun komm der Heiden Heiland/Busoni, Pathétique/Beethoven, C/minor/Rach, a few slow preludes/Bach, Gymnopédies, Traümerei and more of those.  Kind of slow, shadowy...  And now, I feel for "Fun"-stuff, yes, just fun.  Light, poppy, sparkling stuff.  Is there spring in the air, I don't know.  But I want air and freshness, something modern, refreshing.
Any advices, and - ideally - sheetmusic?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Kindly.

Schumann-Liszt Fruhlingsnacht and Carl Sinding's Rustle of Spring come to mind.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Grieg's Brooklet, op.62, no.4, is also a good choice. At the outset, I can see the ice beginning to thaw and glistening under the sunlight. The Scandinavian spring is full of excitments, yet silence is an important part of the music. That is to say, the rest in every measure brings to mind the elusiveness and preciousness of the message of spring. By and by, it begins to flow. How joyful is the scene when the brook finally gets to sing its own song, from the middle section of the piece. Try ir, you will like it.

Theodor Kirchner's Spring-Greeting (Fruehlingsgruss) Op.73 No.2 from his Romantische Geschichten is wonderful.

Parts of it remind me of Schumann's Fantasie in C.

Here's the score.

If you want a recording, PM me.

Edit: Here's the right side up version of the sheets:

Here's another Kirchner Fruehlingsgruss, Op.56 No.1.

Much easier than the Liszt version is Clara's transcription of Fruehlingsnacht.

I think Kirchner's transcription of Fruehlingsnacht is really nice.

The piece really shimmers.

To get off the Spring kick and back to your original request, Alessandro, here are a couple of delightful public domain Latin-American pieces:

Zequinha Abreu "Tico-Tico"

Ernesto Nazareth "Apanhei-te, Cavaquinho"
