What is the best way to compose your own music?
on: April 06, 2008, 06:22:09 PM
Hi all,

Just wondering if there is a best way to compose your own music. I mainly use an electric keyboard and want to compose something classical. But I don't know where to start!

Can anyone help me?

I would just start writing and figure out your process.  Might be the melody.  Might be the harmony.  A combination.  Just start and you'll figure it out.  There is no best way.  It's whatever works for you.  After you've got stuff created, you'll be in a better position to answer this question, and ask more I would think.

Is this music you're writing down?

I generally start out with either a melody line or a basic rhythm/bass thingy.

Having said that I've only written one thing...so I'm not experienced enough to help you properly.

normally i think of a beginning phrase and then i decide whether it's good before i jot it down on a notebook. then i review that phrase again. just a curious question, how many people here compose baroque music?

The best way is to have musical ideas in your mind, to be creative and music sensitive to begin with. The next step is to translate in in the instrument the music you have in your head. At this point what really matters is mastering the art of arranging and understanding how sounds combine together harmonically.
