Hoorah!

Bowen's solo works are wonderful, some call him the British Rachmaninoff.

Hamelin's Busoni concerto is a real treat. Delicious.

Interesting that you use the food analogy there.

I like to snack on movements, myself, and only occasionally listen to a full concerto.

Considering the gargantuan feast the Busoni offers, one might accuse you of musical gluttony, my dear colleague.

The Jadassohn concertos are after the Bowen, if I remember correctly. Has anyone gotten the recent Hiller release?

The 2 Chopin concerti have been recorded about 50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times.

The superb Hyperion series gives us a chance to hear those with few recordings and in a lot of cases, those which have never been recorded before. It is heaven for those of us that are prepared to venture outside of regular rep.

The list of unrecorded Romantic Concerti is long, which should mean this series continuing for some years.

Amen to that.

An excellent resource, but it needs updating.

There are several he has missed out.

Are the Prokofiev CDs (Demidenko soloist) good? My CD library is ready for another addition.

Wait, actually these aren't part of the series.

Prokofiev's have been recorded far too often to be part of the series. And besides, Demidenko's Prokofiev is pretty awful, in my opinion. The best Prokofiev concertos set, in my opinion, is the Neeme Järvi/Horacio Gutiérrez/Boris Berman set.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was listening to Yundi Li and Lugansky in the 2nd on Youtube and neither was totally convincing.

As for over-representation, don't forget that the Hyperion series had Mendelssohn and Saint-Saëns ......

But that's the thing. Mendelssohn's two piano concertos and Saint-Saëns' 2nd concerto are overrepresented. However, there are other works on those disks that are hardly every played, like the Mendelssohn Serenade and Allegro Giocoso or the Saint-Saëns 1st concerto, among others.

And I should mention that in my opinion, the Gutiérrez recording of Prokofiev 2 blows all others out of the water, except possibly Malcolm Frager, who is a close 2nd.

I listened to the Hiller last night. There are some wonderfull moments, but they get a little boring. I find the writing a little "samey", sort of octaves and scales.

I love Sharwenka 4th! That is one of my favoutires from the Hyperion set.

my favourite prok 2 is beroff's. but i'd definitely stay away from demidenko's prok. he seems to play it as though it were chopin, in my opinion.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
