Why the heck do people sign their names at the end?
on: April 12, 2008, 02:44:34 AM
What is the point? We can already see the names of the posters, it seems totally irrelevant to put your name at the end of posts. Maybe some people are keen to keep the letter form, in that case please date your letters too, and address them.

I do when I post something long, or, erm . . . . halfway serious. Just seems to fit; don't know why. Something subconscious, I reckon.

It's like writing a letter or sending an email.  The inbetween area.

Exactly.

We haven't decided how inbetween, because forums are relatively new.

Listservs (only us oldtimers remember those) were the equivalent of writing letters so of course we signed our names.

IMs are spoken conversation so of course we don't.

Forums or fora are somewhere inbetween.
