What does it mean to be a student -- ideal and reality?

I asked a similar thing on the teaching board about teachers.
What would the ideal teacher-student set up be?
And what is it in reality? What should you do as a student?
For example, in reality I doubt the teacher knows everything -- So I should go find some information out for myself and not necessarily buy everything they say.
