Basically, in a music score, the only truly objective thing are the printed notes. An "A" means you push down "A" no matter how the piano is tuned or whatever.
Rhythms are not objective (they are more suggestive), and dynamics are as far from objective as you could imagine.
Rhythms can be in executed in any number of different ways, according to the character you want to achieve. Mechanical evenness is only one character possibility. Where you place the stresses adds a lot to a sense of individuality, even if it may not be written into the score.
Look for instance at the old Chopin editions, edited by people such as von Bülow, Klindworth, Mikuli, and the like. They all interpreted the melodic lines in different ways, and tried to communicate that in the way the music was presented visually.
Dynamics are all relative, and they are relative to a number of factors. Some composer write dynamics according to the personal instruments they were using (Messiaen). Some write dynamics based on the space they envision their piece being played in (Bruckner). Some write dynamics based on structural considerations (Beethoven). There is no decibel level inherent in the marks
forte
or
piano
. These markings need interpretive skill to bring their meaning to light.
Interpretive ability means the ability to take the non-objective elements of music and bring them to life in a way that is coherent and communicates with the audience.

To me, interpretation is the expression of yourself, your soul through the music, with the guidelines, if you wish, of the musical period for which it was written; e.g., you don't want to play Bach like Chopin. if you play music without feeling, without emotion, without the purpose of expressing something from within yourself, it is empty music, and is boring and meaningless. Art without soul is dead.
