Suggestions for Concerto Competition?
on: April 26, 2008, 09:52:49 PM
I need some ideas for a concerto competition this fall...I need something difficult to play (you know, more difficult than Grieg), but not Rach3 or anything. There's a lot that I would love to play but they're all so overplayed...like Rach2 or any of the Liszt/Brahms/Prokofiev, etc...
So basically my question is do you know of any difficult but underplayed/ obscure (not TOO obscure) concertos? I was looking at the Ravel GM piano concerto and also the Poulenc. I'm not sure of the difficulty levels of those, maybe the Poulenc is too easy.? I really like French repertoire, although I've already played Saint-Saens 2 and 4 and I want to learn something new.
Can any of you piano repertoire experts out there help me?
Thanks!  :)

ive never really listened to it much. Perhaps I need to. ll his other PC's seem somehow more immediately accessible to listen to (I haven't really got into No. 3 either, now I think about it)...

why not try Rach 1. Not as overplayed as Rach 2 or 3 and in the same time overwhelming as both of them

I don't know quite how it stands in terms of difficulty or obscurity but what about one of Martinu's concertos. He wrote five. If you like Poulenc, that might be something to look into, since Martinu wrote with a very Parisian bent. Another composer that might turn some heads (in a good way) would be Antheil, whose music is often a combination of French flavors and more aggressive elements of Bartok. I think he wrote 3 concertos but I don't remember for sure.

May I suggest Dohnanyi no. 2? I don't know if the time allotted is enough for a full concerto - this one has to be played in its entirety. It's got a grand conception and plenty of flourish for the soloist, and certainly not overplayed.

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea. I've heard stories of the Dohnányi concertos winning competitions before. They require a pretty proficient soloist though.
