How to not get bored with a piece and not lose the feeling?
on: May 18, 2008, 11:00:25 PM
That's always a concern.
I know I can just hack away at a piece. Play it like a hundred times and it will get better. Technical things will get fixed.
I suppose it depends what type of errors there are. Not having the technique is one thing, but reading difficulties with easy technique is another.
And then if it's supposed to be expressive, how do you not lose actually feeling the music? If I switch my brain over to technical thinking... I'm pretty sure that feeling will go away.
Train myself to still feel the piece though I suppose. Switch back from technical thinking.
But to really get the piece down quickly.... Repetition will do it. But technical fixing and repetition will probably beat out the emotion.

More thoughts....
Probably need to be physically and mentally, emotionally, etc. rested up and ready. Not just ready for that, but in the process of making those decisions too.
Faking it is ok too. It's just a rafter-system thing to hang everything on.
This goes right along with the 'how to inspire students' thread. How to inspire yourself?
And another point -- I must be beating the expression out of the piece during the process of learning the piece.
