What is my piano worth?
on: May 24, 2008, 01:23:09 AM
Please, could someone help me to find out my piano's approximate worth? I have a PLEYEL Vertical Piano, its serial number is 75760, so it's from 1870-1880. I want to know the price as it was restored (it isn't, but I'm gonna restore it)

It's hard to give much idea of cash value but it's almost certainly safe to say that you will be restoring it as a labour of love because the value is likely to be much, much less than the restoration is likely to cost, unless of course you make all the parts from raw materials and don't cost your time! I'd really be surprised if you managed to get much over the mid-hundreds of US$ for such an instrument: it won't be good enough to day-to-day use by a musician, it's not rare enough (or old enough, indeed) to be truly historic, and its value as a piece of furniture won't be much affected by any restoration except to the case. Restore it by all means, it could be fun and worthwhile fom your own point of view, and the results will probably be interesting, but as an investment I doubt there'll be any return.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.
