Bach, easiest to hardest
on: May 28, 2008, 01:12:28 AM
I have some pieces of Bach, and would like to practice it myself, but I don't know which one is more suitable in my stage. I'd also like to know thier level from easy to hard, then I could be able to choose them when I'm progressing.

I'm current playing sonatina. The following are the pieces of Bach I have :

English suites
French suites
six little preludes
six partitas
toccatas
two-part inventions
three-part inventions
harpsichord concerto in d minor
well-tempered clavier book (prelude and fugue)

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions !

Dear lwmuziek,
'Muziek' - Holland, Belgium, South-Africa ?...

From the ones that I know of, I give it a try from easy to hard > Six Little Preludes > Two-Part Inventions > Three-Part Inventions > Well-Tempered Clavier > Six Partitas...  I'm not familiar with the Suites nor the Tocatta, but since Tocattas are often composed to show virtuosity it will end in the top 3...
I'm actually having a real great time learning BWV 850 in the Well-Tempered...  I have this love-hate relation with Bach.  It can sound so full of joy, so pleasant but it's technically demanding...  In this '850' to keep the whole piece well-balanced, fluid, and play it without mistakes, it's challenging, there's something of an obsessive relation I have with a lot of Bachs compositions...
Kindly

I heard someone saying that the french suites aren't that hard and were good for begining with them  or sth else..

Bernhard said in a post (sorry I can't find it) that Bach taught his works in a specific order. If my memory serves me well, it goes like this :

Little Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach
Six Little Preludes
Inventions
Sinfonias
English Suites
French Suites
Six Partitas
Well-Tempered Clavier

I don't know about the Toccatas and Concerto.

Well i've listened to some of the French suites and they don't exactly sound easy though tbh I haven't actually tried them.
