How am I supposed to play this?
on: May 30, 2008, 02:39:56 PM
Hi there! I've been playing the piano for 5 months now, but my teacher gave me a piece, and there's one measure where I don't know how to play it because the first finger of both hands is supposed to play the same note.

I've copied the measure:

The problem is the first C. In both hands it should be played with finger 1. Help!

It's no problem, just play it with one hand or place both thumbs on that key if that helps. This comes up in quite a lot of music, don't worry about it.

Play it with the left hand thumb since the lower one holds out longer.

I would place the right-hand thumb over the C but not press down on the key with that hand. The reason is to get my hand in the proper position to play the rest of the melody, to fool my brain into thinking the melody starts on the C. Otherwise the melody may sound like it starts on the D, which is not what the composer intended.

That's what I would do.
