Favorite Mozart Concerto
on: June 04, 2008, 03:46:16 PM
I used to play mostly romantic pieces, but after playing Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata, I really want to play more Beethoven and Mozart.  I'd really like to play Beethoven's 4th Concerto (I like it more than his fifth), but I think it's too long for me to have a realistic opportunity to play it with an orchestra.  I really don't know much about Mozart's Concertos.

What is everyone's favorite?  The only one I'm somewhat familiar with is the 20th, and I really like that one.

I like the D-minor one (nr20?), and nr 27, Bb flat.  :D

No 9 in E-flat is really nice.

So is No. 23 in A-major. They're both probably the more well-known ones.
I love his Piano Concerto No. 20.

D minor. First Mozart piece I listened to as a kid (Schnabel recording) and it blew me away. I used to love to put it on when there was a storm outside.

Starting with no. 20 all of Mozart concertos are masterpieces, except maybe for the 26th. Can't go wrong with those ones.

Aside from No. 20 on, I just love No. 9 (K271) and No 17 (K453).

Thanks for your input; I'll look more into these.  Who is everyone's favorite Mozart pianist?

I´ve listened to Haskil, Uchida and Schiff so far and I love them all. I also like Brendel.

For me, Robert Casadesus all the way.

I gotta go with Perahia for the concertos. But there are a lot of good choices. In fact it's hard to find a pianist who plays Mozart badly, for some reason.

Try Glenn Gould--or possibly Keith Jarrett's forays into Mozart.  :P

To be totally honest, although I like Brendel, I find his old recordings of Mozart concertos to be more engaging than his more recent ones.  Athough they are gee-whiz fast and light, they seem to suffer a sort of studied, crystalline detachment that lacks depth of emotion.

I forgot about Glenn Gould! But he even admitted that he didn't like Mozart. Keith Jarrett I haven't heard.

I used to love Brendel, but I haven't heard him in a while (I realize he's currently dead.)

I guess if I wanted to make a serious study of it, I could sit down with half-a-dozen recordings of the same concerto and really listen for differences in interpretation. But usually when I hear Mozart on the radio, I just find it so refreshing compared to everything else, that I can't help suspending my critical faculties.
