What has happened to Pletnev?

Quite frankly, I don't know what has happened to Pletnev ... he used to play so amazingly 10-15 years ago and was my favorite then. But in the last years his playing deteriorated. While still brilliant, it often boils down to a combination of exaggerations, rhythmic distortions, and mannerisms characteristic of an aging prima-donna.

He's been spending a lot of time conducting, maybe his piano playing has fallen off a little. In this clip:



It's not the best performance of this piece I've heard, but I wouldn't describe it as eccentric. If anything, it's kind of middle of the road.
